CMS is launching the WISeR pilot program, which will test the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to guide Medicare preauthorization decisions in six states (New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Washington). The goal? Reduce waste, streamline approvals, and curb administrative burdens.

While this could mark an exciting step forward, many clinicians are raising important questions:

-   Who defines what’s “wasteful” in patient care?
-   Could AI deny or delay necessary treatments?
-   How can we ensure physicians’ expertise isn’t overshadowed by algorithms?
