Are You Ready For The HERP Bill?

Are You Ready For The HERP Bill?

What the HERP 👀

As conversations around the proposed HERP bill heat up, one thing is clear: stronger protections for sensitive health data are essential… but privacy shouldn’t come at the expense of research or innovation.

The Health Information Privacy Reform Act (HERP) aims to extend federal privacy protections to health data generated outside traditional clinical settings, like wearables, apps, and connected devices, modernizing privacy laws to reflect how health data is actually created and used today.

At Vironix Health, this balance is core to our work. From our recent ML4H & NeurIPS TS4H presentation on privacy-preserving generative health data modeling to our University of Oxford-affiliated research, we’ve shown how clinically valid synthetic data can be created with formal privacy guarantees, enabling collaboration and insight without exposing real patient information.

🤒 So, what does this mean in practice?

✅ Privacy by design: As policy evolves, technical solutions like privacy-guaranteed synthetic data help organizations stay compliant without slowing innovation.

✅ Research without roadblocks: When data sharing becomes more restricted, synthetic alternatives allow institutions to collaborate and build better health-AI models responsibly.

✅ Trust first: Protecting individuals while empowering science isn’t a tradeoff, but the standard we build toward.

As the HERP bill and other privacy efforts move forward, we believe solutions that preserve both privacy and data access should be central to the conversation on patient care.
